Diorite Stone

Diorite is a type of intrusive igneous rock that is typically found in gray to dark gray colors, with a coarse-grained and usually hypidiomorphic texture. It forms through the slow cooling of molten material (magma) deep beneath the Earth’s surface and contains silica and a moderate amount of alkali metals. Diorite closely resembles granite, but the main difference between the two lies in the type and proportion of their constituent minerals, particularly quartz. Diorite typically contains little to no quartz, whereas granite contains significant amounts of quartz in its composition. Diorite also generally has higher porosity than granite and lower porosity than basalt.

Diorite actually occurs in several varieties with different mineral compositions; however, they are generally classified as intermediate igneous rocks. These include:

• Andesite: An extrusive igneous rock and the volcanic equivalent of diorite, with a fine-grained texture and a color ranging from light to dark gray.
• Granite: An intrusive igneous rock that can be white or gray. Compared with andesite, it has a much coarser-grained texture. The presence of other minerals in granite can produce distinctive colors such as red or white.
• Basalt: A dark-colored extrusive igneous rock, most commonly black, with a fine-grained texture.
