Briefly about marquetry
Generally, marquetry is a type of handicraft and artwork in that small and delicate pieces of wood, stone, fabric, tile, etc., are placed together and beautifully create a unique geometric shape or drawing form. Marquetry is often done on wood and used in framed wall art. Still, it is also made with other materials and has different functions. Stone marquetry is one type of marquetry. Stone marquetry is one of the fascinating stone artifacts which gives a stunning appearance to the floor of the buildings. These beautiful stone artifacts are used at the entrance of buildings, lobbies floor, or the floor inside the elevator.
Types of stone marquetry in terms of construction
Stone marquetry is made by hand or water jet machine. The water jet sample is more accurate due to computer cutting. Because of its elegance, it has a higher price than the handmade sample.
How to make stone marquetry
Handmade marquetry has a relatively more complicated manufacturing process than machine-made ones. In handmade marquetry, first, a stone with dimensions of marquetry is used as a substructure of marquetry (mainly travertine stone). Then the marquetry pattern stencil is placed on the stone, and the pattern is drawn. Now, the borders of the design are done with three-millimeter bronze casts, and it is attached to the underlying stone with glue. Seven-millimeter cuts of central marquetry stones are placed inside these borders at this level. The side seams are covered with the same color glue. The final thickness of this marquetry will be 2.5 cm.
Types of marquetry patterns
These stones are produced in different patterns, colors, and desired dimensions. In general, marquetry patterns are in classic, modern, arabesque traceries, geometric or 3D style, simple or implementation of an element such as a flower or special symbol or logo. Prefab marquetry & on-site installation differences
Marquetry could be prefabricated or installed on-site. Prefabricated or ready-made marquetry is often smaller than 160 cm in dimensions and is easily moved and installed with a unique stand. But in the case of bigger marquetries, the installation will be different. These marquetries often have to be installed on-site, which naturally will have more effect and beauty due to the larger size of the pattern. Also, the cost and implementation time will be naturally higher. You can see some examples of it in the pictures below.

In the pictures below, you can see the marquetry lobby floor stone of the doctors’ building in Farmaniye, in dimensions 2*5, with four beautiful marble stones. The stones used on the floor of this lobby include dark and light Emperador marble stone with Dehbid black marble and crema marfil marble stone.
Large marquetry could be composed of miniature marquetry. In this case, in which the pattern will often be in the form of 4 symmetries, it will be possible to make and send it directly to the place. Installing these types of marquetry is also possible by combining the parts.
