Diorite is an igneous rock found in shades of gray and dark gray, characterized by a coarse-grained texture with irregular or semi-formed crystals. It is formed through the slow cooling of molten material (magma) and contains silica along with a relatively small amount of alkali metals. This stone closely resembles granite; however, the key difference between the two lies in the presence of quartz. Diorite does not contain quartz, whereas granite contains abundant amounts of quartz in its composition. In addition, diorite has higher porosity than granite but lower porosity than basalt. Diorite is available in several varieties that share the same composition. These include:
Andesite: An extrusive igneous rock composed of a combination of granite and basalt. It features a fine-grained texture and ranges in color from light gray to dark gray.
Granite: An extrusive igneous rock that can be white or gray in color. Compared to andesite, it has much larger grains. The presence of other minerals in granite may produce unusual colors such as red or white.
Basalt: A dark-colored extrusive igneous rock, most commonly black, with a fine-grained texture.
