For this reason, to facilitate, the dead were placed on high cliffs and mountains. The tombstones, many of which date back to the 4th century, are protected by massive entrances decorated with tall Romanesque columns and intricate reliefs. The interior consists of chambers cut into simple stones to display the body despite the exterior grandeur.

This unusual and distinctive tombstone was designed by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle in memory of her assistant, Ricardo Menon, who passed away in 1989 at the age of 37. The inscription at the base of the cat reads, “In memory of our young and beloved friend Ricardo, who left this world far too soon.”

After his passing, his family chose to commemorate him with a tombstone shaped like his favorite vehicle, a BMW convertible. This one-ton sculpture, installed with the help of twenty people, cost around £50,000 and is crafted entirely from granite.

11/ Tombstone With A Small Window

Merit Birdsley was eight years old when he passed away in December 1865, reportedly from an incurable illness. According to accounts, shortly before his death, he dreamt of his grandmother and expressed to his family his fear of being buried alone in darkness. To honor his wishes, his family promised that he would not be laid to rest in complete darkness. In keeping with this promise, he was interred in a small tomb featuring a window.

Today, the “Little Tomb of Merit” lies peacefully beneath the towering pokeweed trees and is regarded as one of the least-visited burial sites in Chautauqua County, in the city of Oxford, New York. Despite a past marked by neglect and occasional vandalism, Stephen Foster has dedicated over a decade to the voluntary preservation and care of this sacred site.


12/ Raymond Benz Tombstone

Raymond was a Chinese-American teenager who had long dreamed of obtaining a driver’s license and owning a luxury Mercedes-Benz. Unfortunately, while studying in Hong Kong, he passed away due to illness. His body was brought to New Jersey, where his older and wealthy brother, David, was living at the time.

Shortly before Raymond’s untimely death, his older brother David had learned of his final wish directly from him and decided to fulfill it. To honor this desire, he commissioned a massive granite block worth $250,000 to be sculpted into a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 240 Diesel limousine. The work was executed by the renowned Rock of Ages quarry in Graniteville, Vermont, and took approximately 17 to 18 months to complete.
